Dangerous Prayers Summary (Source: Priston Jones)

In this book, Craig challenges us to pray three dangerous requests of our God: Search me, break me, send me. He challenges us to pray from the heart because it is personal and unmistakable. To be simple yet direct and not get bored with our prayers. Throughout the book, Craig dives deep into each segment of the prayer: search me, break me, and send me.

In the first section of the book he explains how we should ask God to search us. God is the creator of everything and he knows our thoughts, our actions, and our hearts. He knows us as our truest selves in a way that no other person can know us. Because of this, we must pray dangerously and ask God to search us; to search our minds and our hearts to find those things that might be offensive to Him. This forces us to face out own shortcomings and selfishness. Ask God to reveal all those things that might show the slightest offense to Him. Through this prayer we must face our greatest fears and our biggest downfalls. Praying for God to search us reveals where our trust in God is weak because it exposes our fears: “Ultimately, our fears show how we’re relying on our own efforts and not trusting in our Savior”. So we must gain the courage to pray to God and ask Him to search us and reveal those things that are not Holy in the hopes that through exposure and head on confrontation we can drive them from our being.

In the second section of the book, Craig challenges us to pray to ask God to break us. This was the scariest request in the book. It is hard to imagine asking God to bring you to a low, broken place. When you think about the power that God has and the low places that he is capable of taking you it truly is difficult to understand that the lessons God teaches and the connection he builds when we are at our lowest is often one of the strongest interactions we can ever obtain with our God. We gain our maturity through troubling times, so by praying only safe prayers, we are robbing ourselves of the wisdom and maturity that come with being broken down.
When God choses to break us, he takes away our sense of self. In that low place of selflessness, we can truly recognize our whole reliance on our Savior. We hang on to our comfort with safe prayers by surrendering the lessons learned through being broken. So even though it might be one of the scariest things you’ll ever ask of God, it is worth asking for Him to break us and bring us closer to Him in the process.

The last section of the book is focused on how we need to step out of our comfort zones and be prepared to move for God. Instead of asking for detailed information and only doing things in God’s name when it suits us, we need to be prepared to ask God to send us wherever He needs us whenever He needs us. Whenever God calls us we should respond immediately with nothing other than a resounding YES. God does not hide from us. He is waiting for us to come to Him. All we have to do is say yes and God will use us. So we must pray for Him to send us. Let Him know we are ready and that the answer will be yes at any time under any circumstance. We will go wherever he sends us and do whatever He asks. It will often make us uncomfortable, but it will also grow us and grow the kingdom of God in the process.

Daily Bible Nugget Insight from Dangerous Prayers

The book, dangerous prayers by Craig Groeschel teachers us how to prayer in such a way that we may not have prayed before. The book opens up for us a new channel to communicate with God. There are ways that God requires we communicate with Him in prayers which most of us do not know about. The seemingly fearsome part of the book is where section where Craig challenges us to pray to ask God to break us. This might seem unnecessary, but then, it is an unavoidable part of spiritual growth. Hardship gives us the opportunity to draw closer to God the more. It makes our experience of life in its entirety complete. Hence, let us stop seeing hardship as something evil, rather as one of the ways through which God teaches other mysteries of life which otherwise we would know. Whenever you encounter hardship in your life, look up to God and find a meaning in it.

1.0 out of 5 stars You Don’t Have to be Wrecked to Be Used By God

Very excited about this but it didn’t go where I thought. Yes, ask God for big prayers – Ask things for your family, for nations, for strangers, for friends, theres no limit – ASK. If you aren’t asking the right things, as you walk with Him, God will correct you. But as someone whose life has been in trauma, abuse, fear, etc – to ask God to make my life worse, to make my family suffer EVEN more to be used by God, Im sorry. Thats not a prayer of wisdom and a good portion is spent on this. We may not know why God does or allows things and YES we must FULLY surrender to Him in ALL places in our life but I couldn’t keep going. This book made me feel afraid and fearful of bringing more suffering on purpose by Gods hand. I still support Craig – he is wonderful – and I hope the body if Christ prays dangerous prayers that the HOLY SPIRIT leads them to – not that man wants them to to try and understand. Again, I still support Craig but could not recommend this book unless you’ve only lived fluffy Christianity. I doubt those in prison or suffering for Christ are asking God to wreck their lives and to break them more. Search my heart God YES but not add more pain. I hope my heart is clear in this review… definitely not recommended for anyone who is already exhausted by life’s hardship that the fall brings on its own and who need to see more of the goodness and love of God.

I cannot fully express how much I enjoyed reading this book; WOW! I must say that I have had a problem reading any Christian book since I have been saved, it’s like getting a “reader’s block”. Before reaching halfway in a book, I would get sleepy or I would begin to question the book: “should I be reading this? Did they only write this to make money? Or, why do they sound so perfect or like they have personally spoken to God?” I can tell you, I did not encounter any of those questioning or feeling sleepy. In fact, what I encountered was awe and wishing I could personally meet the author! He keeps it so real, he is so humble! I could relate with him on so many levels. This is a beautiful book and I am so thankful that I have hopefully broken my “readers block” permanently because now I wish I could afford all his books! Mr. Groeschel, thank you for your humility that essentially allows us to connect with you. God bless!

Craig Groeschel is so good at encouraging us to go deeper in our walk with God. This time it is in our prayer life. Are our prayers in line with Gods will or are we seeking safety, comfort, and the things we want or “think” God wants for us. To see and experience God to the fullest, we have to pursue him and “his” desires to the fullest. Our prayers need to reflect a full submission to him and heartfelt longing for what he wants in our lives, instead of what we want. That isn’t always going to be fun and may take us places we never would have chosen to go on our own, but when you know the God that created the entire universe loves you more than anything, you can trust him on the journey. Gods miracles are on the other side of our comfort zone and when we fully trust him with our “entire” lives. I love you Lord. Use me for your glory. Let your will be done in my life. I trust you always!
