The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry Summary

“Who am I becoming?”

That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words:

“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.”

It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil.

Within the pages of this book, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

John Mark Comer

John Mark Comer author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry pdf book is the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, the director and teacher of Practicing the Way, and the bestselling author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry and four previous books.

Much of his writing is focused on the work of spiritual formation in post-Christian culture. The gnawing questions that get him out of bed in the morning are, How do we experience life with God in the digital age? And how do we change to become more like Jesus in a culture where emotional health and spiritual maturity are rare? To that end, he is regularly found reading the desert fathers and mothers, ancient saints and obscure contemplatives, modern psychologists and social scientists, philosophers like Dallas Willard, and the weekly op-ed page. When he’s not reading, he can be found attempting to learn how to cook for his wife and children, drinking Heart coffee, and walking the family dog in the forest.

John Mark graduated from Western Seminary and has a master’s degree in biblical and theological studies.

This book is deeply needed content. Comer’s giftedness as a well-read wordsmith and a cultural observer are put to great use here.

A sample of great quotes:

“There is more at stake [with technology] than our attention spans. Because what you give your attention to is the person you become. Put another way: the mind is the portal to the soul, and what you fill your mind with will shape the trajectory of your character. In the end, your life is no more than the sum of what you gave your attention to.” (55)

“One of the key tasks of our apprenticeship to Jesus is living into both our potential and our limitations.” (63)

On wanting the Jesus life without the Jesus lifestyle: “It’s often quoted that “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” But that’s exactly what we do! We get a vision the kind of life that’s possible in Jesus; we go to church or read a book or listen to a podcast; we catch a glimpse of the kind of life we ache for—one of emotional health and spiritual life. Our gut immediately says, *Yes. God I want that life!* We head home from church with all the willpower we can muster and set out to change. But then we go right back to living the exact same lifestyle. And nothing changes. It’s the same cycle on repeat: stress, tiredness, distraction. We feel stuck yet again. And then we wonder, what am I missing? The method of change simply doesn’t work.” (86)

“Jesus doesn’t offer an escape, but ‘equipment.’ He offers His apprentices a whole new way to bear the weight of our humanity: with ease. At His side. Like two oxen in a field, tied shoulder to shoulder. With Jesus doing all the heavy lifting. At His pace. Slow, unhurried, present to the moment, full of love and joy and peace. An easy life isn’t an option; an easy yoke is.” (88)

“To really enjoy the seventh day, you have the slow down the other six days. You can’t go ninety miles-per-hour all week, running the pedal to the floor, harrowing your soul to the bone for six days straight, and then expect to slam on the brakes for Sabbath and immediately feel zen awesome. You have to find the rhythm. Because the Sabbath isn’t just a 24-hour time slot in your weekly schedule. It’s a spirit of restfulness that goes with you throughout the week. A way of working from rest, not for rest, with nothing to prove. A way of bearing fruit from abiding, not ambition.” (172)

There’s lots more good stuff, but I’ll leave that for you to find!

It is rare to find a book that changes your way of thinking … FOREVER. As someone who retired two years ago, I thought perhaps this book would likely be unhelpful since my pace has slowed. Ahh… not true. This book hit me right between the eyes. I was actually relentlessly committed to hurry – still.
John Mark Comer transformed my view and guided me to be honest with myself.
His approach, honesty and transparency has changed my approach to everything from rushing to the shorter checkout line to accepting that we
“Can’t Do It All” to
“Entertainment Anxiety.
Yeah, it’s a real thing.
Now I RUTHLESSLY ELIMINATE HURRY from my life. And, I’m eternally grateful.

I’m not going to give too much away here, but please buy this book now. If it came recommended to you, don’t give it a second thought. We are reading this book at our church for lent and begrudgingly I bought it, thinking it was going to be another one of those lent type books. I was pleasantly surprised. I genuinely can’t put this book down. The way the guy writes this book is easy on the eye and if you follow the authors advice, it WILL change your life. A superb and timely book especially given what is going on in the world at the moment. Buy it. Today!

5.0 out of 5 stars An ‘easy read’, well…Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 3, 2020

This book is well written and JMC has a unique style that feels conversational and makes it easy to read. However, this book is anything but an easy read when it comes to self reflection as it speaks into our need to slow down. It’s full of challenge, but equally paired with helpful and manageable advice to live a ‘slower’ life. The final chapter around slowing down is super practical but don’t jump to that, take everything else in and let that be the context to what feels like JMC’s manifesto formed as a recovering ‘hurrier’. You might easily become agitated as you read this book… I did at times, but I think it’s important to take into account the authors heart in why he does some of the things that he does, he explains this well towards the end of the book, stick with it, it’s worth the read!

I came upon this book by chance (or maybe God sent me to it)! Either way, I read it in about 8 hours, literally a book I could not put down! (Although I had to for our evening devotional, then I rapidly went back to it). This is just the 1st pass. It has waaaaaay too much valuable, useful information to just read it through once.

I both read the book and simultaneously listened to the audiobook, which was Very useful, if you can, I recommend that you do this. You get to hear all of the inflections and emotions running through the book whilst, also highlighting the quotable and memorable portions. An advantage in the book is, getting access to a free workbook (usually you also get this with Audible, but I didn’t check).

It’s possible to not only Stop the Busyness, but it’s also possible to do it with Jesus. That, is such a relief! God Willing, I shall start this in the morning. Quiet Time; It’s the Jesus way!

(It’s a new-ish year, I intend to gift this book to my family, friends and church. Despite living in Lockdown London, we’re still too busy and when our lockdown lifts, it will be the perfect time to start applying these Spiritual Principles).
