About Fulton J. Sheen Author of Life is Worth Living pdf Book
Fulton J. Sheen
Fulton John Sheen author of life is worth living pdf book was born in El Paso, Illinois, in 1895. In high school, he won a three-year university scholarship, but he turned it down to pursue a vocation to the priesthood. He attended St. Viator College Seminary in Illinois and St. Paul Seminary in Minnesota. In 1919, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois. He earned a licentiate in sacred theology and a bachelor of canon law at the Catholic University of America and a doctorate at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium.
Sheen received numerous teaching offers but declined them in obedience to his bishop and became an assistant pastor in a rural parish. Having thus tested his obedience, the bishop later permitted him to teach at the Catholic University of America and at St. Edmund’s College in Ware, England, where he met G.K. Chesterton, whose weekly BBC radio broadcast inspired Sheen’s later NBC broadcast, The Catholic Hour (1930–1952).
In 1952, Sheen began appearing on ABC in his own series, Life Is Worth Living. Despite being given a time slot that forced him to compete with Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra, the dynamic Sheen enjoyed enormous success and in 1954 reach tens of millions of viewers, non-Catholics as well as Catholics.
When asked by Pope Pius XII how many converts he had made, Sheen responded, “Your Holiness, I have never counted them. I am always afraid if I did count them, I might think I made them, instead of the Lord.”
Sheen gave annual Good Friday homilies at New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, led numerous retreats for priests and religious, and preached at summer conferences in England.
“If you want people to stay as they are,” he said, “tell them what they want to hear. If you want to improve them, tell them what they should know.” This he did, not only in his preaching but also in the more than ninety books he wrote. His book, Peace of Soul was sixth on the New York Times best-seller list.
Sheen served as auxiliary bishop of New York (1951–1966) and as bishop of Rochester (1966–1969).
His two great loves were for the Blessed Mother and the Eucharist. He made a daily holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament, from which he drew strength and inspiration to preach the gospel and in the presence of which he prepared his homilies. “I beg [Christ] every day to keep me strong physically and alert mentally in order to preach His gospel and proclaim His Cross and Resurrection,” he said. “I am so happy doing this that I sometimes feel that when I come to the good Lord in Heaven, I will take a few days’ rest and then ask Him to allow me to come back again to this earth to do some more work.”
The good Lord called Fulton Sheen home in 1979. His television broadcasts, now on tape, and his books continue his earthly work of winning souls for Christ. Sheen’s cause for canonization was opened in 2002, and in 2012 Pope Benedict XVI declared him “Venerable.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Fulton Sheen at his finest
Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021
Book that mirrors his popular tv show. A must have for any Christian. Even though this program existed decades ago, the words are very relevant for our times and are almost prophetic. Easy quick read that you will be coming back to read again. This is also sprinkled with small jokes and antidotes. Word of Warning: Fulton Sheen’s words/ teaching can be addictive! You will want more, to hear, to read, to learn from this great man of God. Quality paperback in cover and paper.
5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and faith-filled guidance for one’s pilgrimage in this life!

Fulton J. Sheen, soon to be Saint Fulton Sheen, was a brilliant and incredibly faith-filled man! Both attributes come through in his writing, without losing connection with the reader. He writing borders on poetic as he makes connections of the divine with the prosaic.
The television program upon which this book is based won Emmy awards in it’s day. Milton Berle, appearing in the same time slot on another network, mentioned losing audience share to Sheen. This program was captivating and for those of us who grew up watching it, this book is a chance to reconnect to the sense of the Holy Spirit that so easily used Sheen as a means of expression.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book full of wisdom and humor

I never saw most of his TV shows, but I have truly enjoyed every chapter in this book. The sections on anxiety and depression alone are worth reading this entire book. He was clearly an intelligent and well read individual who had so much to offer in his teachings. His writings are still relevant.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book Filled With Sheen’s Classic Life Insights

This is written by a Catholic bishop who used to have a TV program by the same name. Much has changed in our media today, and shows like that are probably only on certain premium channels. I find it very well written by a deep thinking and wise person, which Fulton Sheen was. Since both he and his era of faith programming are gone, this is a wonderful book for Christian people wanting to hear his perspectives on a variety of life topics.
5.0 out of 5 stars There is a lot to learn here, to make your life run smoother.

I still find it amazing how Fulton Sheen’s thoughts are still up to date in many areas. He can be verbose at times, but still gets his point across effectively. I would hope that the younger generation would read this, despite the flowery language of the time, and some dated topics regarding the US. However, the sociology, psychology, and spiritual topics, still ring true to the present times. There is a lot to learn here, to make your life run smoother. I am enjoying this and highly recommend it!

The wisdom of this book is appropriate for all who have ever wondered “why am I here?” It addresses so many aspects of life in easily digestible chunks and in such a sensible fashion that anyone can understand. Bishop Sheen inserts little tidbits of wit amidst the wisdom which makes this an enjoyable read as well as fitting to today’s circumstances. Highly recommend.
