Crazy Love Summary

God is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it? It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe–the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor–loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you’ve verbalized it yet or not…we all know somethings wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts–it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

I really enjoyed some of the things Chan had to say in his book. I felt challenged to think about things in a new way and to try to live out my faith more fervently.

At the same time, I feel that his book pushes a “works over faith” mentality. He focuses very much on “What are you doing to show that you are living for Christ?”, which is good to a point, but can also push people to focus so much on what they’re doing that they forget to actually maintain a relationship with God. I found myself feeling very attacked at some points. I disagreed with some of his claims to things that should and should not be seen in the life of a follower of Christ. Biblical people who had sin issues in their lives despite being followers of God are completely ignored (David, Moses, Aaron, etc.). Instead, Chan gives the perception that people who have given their lives to Christ shouldn’t have questions, shouldn’t struggle, etc. Those that do, he appears to question their salvation.

Chapter 5 was the chapter that really upset me. If it were not for the fact that we were reading this book for my life group, I would have stopped reading the book right there. Chan does have good things to say both in Chapter 5, before, and after, but some of the claims he made in Chapter 5 upset me so much (he suggested that a person asking if you have to be baptized to go to heaven is simply asking, can I not follow Christ and still get to heaven) that I was in tears and sick to my stomach.

I think Chan had good intentions, but I do not agree with some of his claims and was very upset by several. Therefore, I would not recommend this book.

There is a whole lot of punch packed into this little book. Giving it a 4.9 star rating. This book really inspired me. I’ve been looking around me wondering about the state of the world lately. How we’ve gotten where we are. How we’ve forgotten to give glory, and honor, and praise to our God. How we forget who He is and who we are in comparison to Him. How we have taken on the role of creator (or tried to) and have fallen miserably short. This book is about coming to see God, an accurate picture of God. It’s about praising Him. It’s about coming to a love for Him that will move you to action. It’s not just about loving God, it’s about being IN LOVE WITH GOD! (There is a difference.) And Francis Chan challenges you to take a look at yourself to see what it is that you’re expecting out of your relationship with the Almighty, Creator God. Are you only looking for the blessings He has the potential to bestow upon you? Do you realize that none of this is about YOU but it’s all about HIM?

I have to say, I NEVER highlight in fiction books. I rarely highlight in non-fiction books. I do, however, highlight all throughout my Bible (personal preference and decision of mine), but I also have to say that I highlighted all throughout this book, as well. Of course that was somewhat easier and less messy because of it being a kindle version. Yet, highlighting wasn’t enough. I found myself copying sections of this book into a notebook because they were powerful, they moved me, and they made me take a hard look at myself. Am I lukewarm? All who are godly in Christ will suffer persecution–where is my persecution? Will I follow if God calls me to do something radical with my life? And do I have a love for Him that is passionate and evident to those around me because I just can’t contain it?

I appreciate the amount of Scripture used in this book. Also, there are at least two videos that he requests you go to the website and watch. I wasn’t able to do it at the exact moment I came to those passages in the book, but I did make time to go back and watch them later, and I am really glad that I did. I highly suggest that you incorporate those videos into your process through the book.

Francis Chan left me with a lot to think about, but he challenged me not to stop there. He challenged me to move myself into action. If you need a good kick in the butt, a refresher on what it means to love a Holy God, or you just want to see what all the talk is about, I suggest you check out this book. It will always be my reminder to you on any post I do of a book that has any religious subject that you check out what the Creator has to say for Himself. The Bible is and always will be the Source of all information that we have about our God. It is the Living-Word and sharper than any two-edged sword. It is a love story from the beginning to the end. And Francis Chan reminded me of that. My Abba Father has an a crazy, radical love for me. And I’m just as giddy as a school girl when I stop and think about it.

Francis Chan Crazy Love

This is the best non-fiction book I’ve read in a long, long time. I didn’t want to read it. However I promised my nephew – so I did. I’ve grown cynical of Christian non-fiction lately. Most are written from the same emergent/postmodern viewpoint. They start with variations on the “is this all the Christ-life has to offer?” question, and then want us to believe they have the answer the church has somehow missed for the last 2000 years. It seems both shallow and copied. I thought this was going to be more of the same. Mercy was I wrong.

Francis takes scripture, dusts it off and with polished clarity sticks it in right front of our nose. It starts with the same question, (is this all the Christ-life has to offer?) but takes us through difficult in-your-face biblical answers. This is one of the most enjoyable yet convicting books I’ve read yet. Thank you Francis Chan! Some of my favorite quotes are:

* “A friend was asked if he didn’t think he spent too much time serving and giving. His response: I wonder if you’ll say that after we’re dead.”
* Quoting Tim Kizziar: “Our greatest fear as individuals and as a church should not be in failure but of succeeding in things that don’t matter.”
* Quoting CS Lewis: “If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this one.”
* In a challenge to live lean to give more Francis says: “The concept of downsizing so that others may upgrade is biblical, beautiful… and practically unheard of.”
* “So get over yourself. U exist to bring Him glory.”

Well said Francis!

Francis Chan writes a simple, frank and challenging epistle-type commentary on his walk with God. His getting to know this magnificent God, or at least different aspects of Him. There are truths that Francis encounters that will ring in your ears with familiarity and there are truths that will burn through you, yearning to set you free if you will but embrace it. He is deeply in love with Jesus and the impartation of faith he releases as he writes makes this book more than just a book. Be open and be ready to let your heart be examined. You will be richer for it. Reading it affords fellowship as so much of it is relevant to our daily walk, you can walk the walk together through the pages.

I bought the book after watching a sermon by Francis Chang. Although the book is easy to read, I found it very challenging and convicting. He is a Christian who takes the Bible seriously and is an inspiration for us who likes to think we are following Christ, but at the same time does not look any different than our unbelieving neighbor. After reading this book, I also bought his book on the Holy Spirit. Two of my friends are also busy with the book and found it life changing as well.
I have read loads of Christian books, but this is by far one of the best and I will recommend it to anybody who wants a deeper walk with the Lord.
